Women across the land are standing up, calling out misogyny and holding men accountable for their actions! E. Jean Carroll has won the second landmark case against the 45th president to hopefully stop him from defaming her. Several of the prosecutors and judges in 45’s other cases are also women. From Liz Cheney to Cassidy Hutchinson, it was many women in the GOP who called out the big lie for what it is. And women will save our democracy in November by “storming” the polls, like the deplorables did on January 6th. We are in this together, and the blue tsunami is just barely starting to form…
“Dear Ijeawele, or A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Are you looking for a book that will inspire you to raise your daughter as a feminist? If so, check out Adichie’s inspiring bestseller. This book is a letter from the author to her friend, who asked for advice on how to raise her baby girl to be a strong, independent woman.
Adichie shares fifteen practical and insightful suggestions on how to challenge gender stereotypes, empower girls, and celebrate their individuality. From teaching them to love reading, encouraging them to pursue their passions, to letting them choose their own clothes, Adichie offers a refreshing and empowering perspective on feminism and parenting. Whether you are a parent, a teacher, or a friend of a girl, this book will give you valuable tools to help you support the girls in your life.
My favorite quote: “Your feminist premise should be: I matter. I matter equally. Not ‘if only.’ Not ‘as long as.’ I matter equally. Full stop.”
“Thanks to Barbie, all the problems of feminism have been solved”
– from ‘Barbie’ the Movie
Welp, that didn’t last long.. Obviously said in jest at the outset, this quote from the movie was underscored last week with the Oscar noms snub of the film’s matriarchs.
‘Barbie’ garnered 8 nominations, including a ‘Best Picture’ nod, but glaringly absent from the list was Greta Gerwig in the Best Director category and Margot Robbie for Best Actress.
The backlash online was palpable. Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera, both nominated in their respective ‘Supporting’ categories, fittingly came out in support of the snubbed duo. Public figures like Hilary Clinton even spoke out.
Given that the point of the movie was that women are marginalized in a world still dominated by the patriarchy, should we be surprised at the snub?
Is this life imitating art imitating life? Let’s choose to be encouraged by the uprising swell of feminism and channel that to the polls in November.
National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF)
Abortion funds are local, grassroots organizations that help arrange and fund abortion care for those patients who seek it. In many states where access is limited, abortion funds additionally will foot the bill for transportation and lodging if someone who needs an abortion must travel for the procedure.
NNAF is determined to build a world where all reproductive options are valued, accessible, and stigma-free. They believe all people know how to best care for their own bodies and build their own families. And they’re committed to ensuring the conversation about racial, economic, and reproductive justice includes the people most affected by the barriers to abortion access.
NNAF makes it easy to donate to an array of organizations all over the country, taking your payment and splitting it evenly among the states that need it most.
Together with these funds, they organize and add strength to their call:
Fund Abortion! Build Power!
Allie Phillips running for Tennessee’s 75th District
What do you do if your state oppresses you and forces you to leave in order to get the healthcare you need to save your life? You run for Congress, of course!
In 2022, Allie became pregnant… Unfortunately, at 19 weeks she learned that the fetus was not viable. To make matters worse, Tennessee’s state-wide abortion ban made termination impossible.
With a risk of sepsis, blood clots, or more, Allie underwent an emergency abortion in New York alone, in a city she had never been to before, without her family or her husband there by her side.
Women’s rights is a top priority in her bid to be a House Representative in Tennessee’s 75th District. She is also focusing on childcare access, Medicare expansion and the public school system, especially the disability system, since her older daughter has some autism.
Go Allie! We are behind you 100%!
Ohio lawmakers aren’t getting the message.. The people have spoken!
In 2023, the GOP lost the battle to get abortion on the ballot in November. Then they lost the war to codify abortion rights into the state constitution by losing said election.
The people have spoken – TWICE! First they came out in August for the special election to reject the requirement for a supermajority to amend the state constitution. Then they came out in November to add Abortion rights in as an amendment to the state constitution.
Now the Ohio legislature is doubling down on their fascist tactics.. threatening to just ignore the new state law and STILL criminalize abortion in the state. It’s enough to infuriate countless organizers who worked so hard to turn out the vote in both elections.
Is it enough to turn Ohio Blue in November?? We shall see..
Write Postcards for NY-3 with Grassroots Democrats
Here’s something you can do from the comfort and warmth of your home (and your pajamas, we won’t tell!) this winter… There’s still a few weeks left before the Special Election in NY-3 to replace the disgraced George Santos, or whatever his name really is..
As we highlighted last week in Campaign Corner, Tom Suozzi is running for NY-3. We need to ensure the voters know about this Special Election so they come out and make their voice heard. Both in person and absentee voter campaigns are in progress for this election on February 13th. Handwritten postcards really make people notice, since nobody gets them anymore.
This November, they are also targeting several representative districts in California they are hoping to flip (to D from R) or defend (keep D) in order to turn the House Blue in November. Senate races in Arizona, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas are also on the list.
