In the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe V. Wade and a country divided, Choices offers an unapologetic and authoritative take on abortion and women’s right to choose.

Merle Hoffman has been at the forefront of the reproductive freedom movement since the 1970s. Three years before the Supreme Court legalized abortion through Roe v. Wade, she helped to establish one of the United States’ first abortion centers in Flushing, Queens. Hoffman later went on to found Choices, one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive women’s medical facilities. For the last five decades, Hoffman has been a steadfast warrior and fierce advocate for every woman’s right to choose.

Now, Hoffman has compiled decades of analysis, research, and experience into the tour de force manifesto.

In Choices, Hoffman expresses her views on where we are and what lies ahead. She covers topics ranging from: revamping the healthcare system to support women’s rights; combatting rising authoritarianism; the weaponization of religion; fighting the antis; practicing courage; sabotage from within the movement; and activating the next generation in the fight for reproductive justice.

In a world dominated by patriarchal values, the words of Bette Davis strike a chord that resonates through the ages. Her quote encapsulates the double standard that women are subjected to when expressing their thoughts and beliefs.

This disparity in perception is not just a relic of the past; it still persists today for many women. Men who assert their opinions are seen as confident and authoritative. In contrast, women are often labeled as aggressive or difficult when they do the same.

Davis’s words challenge us to examine the biases that permeate our society. She reminds us that equality is also about the freedom to speak one’s mind without fear of derogatory labels.

As we reflect on this powerful statement, it’s crucial to recognize that change begins with awareness and dialogue. Call out these double standards and support women in their right to voice their opinions as freely as men. We can move closer to a world where gender does not dictate the validity of one’s perspective.

Davis’ quote is more than just a pithy remark; it’s a call to action to dismantle the prejudices that hinder true gender equality.

Cori Bush is an activist, nurse, and community leader who redefines what it means to be a member of Congress. She has lived the struggles regular people endure every day. She has first hand experience of the ways injustice holds people back in St. Louis and across America.

In her first year as Congresswoman, Cori introduced major legislation such as a Green New Deal for Cities and the People’s Response Act. She also led a campaign on the steps of the U.S. Capitol to prevent eviction for renters during the pandemic. Rep. Bush is a forceful voice for people in Missouri who have felt neglected by our government’s priorities. Now, she runs for re-election to do even more.

“I do this work to save lives. I know what it’s like to live paycheck to paycheck, to be burdened with student and medical debt, and to live day-to-day in St. Louis where we face the violence of poverty, police abuse, crime, and disinvestment. We need a champion for policies that will affect residents of Missouri’s 1st directly. I am that champion.”

“For me, this is personal. I chose to terminate my pregnancy after I was sexually assaulted in 1994. That decision was the hardest one I’ve ever made, but it was right for me, and it altered the course of my life. I can’t describe the rage I feel now when I think that today’s Supreme Court would have tried to force me to carry my rapist’s child.”

“We are not powerless, and we will not stop until abortion care is legal everywhere. Together, we will build the future we deserve.”

Pregnant women are getting a lower standard of care post-Roe because doctors are afraid to treat them.

The Lift Louisiana report reminds us that it’s dangerous to be pregnant in post-Roe America, whether or not the pregnancy is wanted.

Conservative politicians have threatened OB/GYN doctors with possible litigation due to restrictive abortion laws. Some doctors won’t see patients until after 12 weeks for fear of being investigated for a miscarriage.

Doctors are right to worry. The state attorney general, Jeff Landry, sent doctors a letter saying, “I will put you in jail if you break these rules.”

In states like Louisiana, doctors risk losing their license, being fined or ending up in jail just for treating pregnant women .

“The confusion and fear caused by the bans have led patients and clinicians to be unsure of what information they can ask for or provide,” the Lift Louisiana Report concludes. It continues.. “including whether a patient is experiencing a miscarriage and referrals to abortion care outside the state.”

Basically, it’s scary to be pregnant in Louisiana..

The Supreme Court passed Dobbs, eliminating federal protections for abortion rights. Now half the United States has restrictive abortion bans.

F$CK SCOTUS.. We’re doing it anyway!

Shout Your Abortion (SYA) is normalizing abortion and elevating safe paths to access, regardless of legality. SYA makes resources, campaigns, and media intended to arm existing activists, create new ones, and foster collective participation in abortion access all over the country.

Currently SYA has nonprofit sponsorship, meaning they function like a nonprofit and can accept tax‑ deductible donations, but are also an LLC. SYA is in its seventh year as an organization, and they fund programming with grants, donations, speaking fees, and income from their online shop. They facilitate projects and events all over the country.

SYA functions more like a collective than a traditional nonprofit. Each community that springs up around the concept of SYA is responsible for establishing their own values and norms. What works for a group of punks in Brooklyn will probably not work as well for a group of retirees in the Midwest— and that’s okay. In fact, that’s great! They believe this fight requires a range of tones and approaches. Find a SYA community that fits you!
